Is the Pope above the law? No.

There has been a very long standing joke that catholic priests rape young boys. Not a funny joke in my opinion, as it is based in some fact…

The head of the Catholic Church is of course the Pope. There have been recent revelations that he has been covering up the horrific crimes of an American priest in the 1990’s when he was in charge of investigating sexual abuse cases within the church. Instead of defrocking the priest for abusing 200 or more boys at St John’s School for the Deaf in St Francis, Wisconsin, between 1950 and 1974, he chose to cover it up “for the good of the universal church”. Sick.

From the London Evening Standard comes this bit about the cover-up:

The Pope played a leading role in a systematic cover-up of child sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests, according to a shocking documentary to be screened by the BBC tonight.

In 2001, while he was a cardinal, he issued a secret Vatican edict to Catholic bishops all over the world, instructing them to put the Church’s interests ahead of child safety.

The document recommended that rather than reporting sexual abuse to the relevant legal authorities, bishops should encourage the victim, witnesses and perpetrator not to talk about it. And, to keep victims quiet, it threatened that if they repeat the allegations they would be excommunicated.

Now there is a call for having the Pope arrested for crimes against humanity. Richard Dawkins, the famous atheist scientist, is looking at legal options to have the Pope arrested on his next visit to Britain. The argument is that the Vatican is not a recognized state by the UN, and therefore the Pope can’t claim diplomatic immunity. Here is a link to the article about the plan.

Richard Dawkins: I will arrest Pope Benedict XVI

I don’t think it will happen, but I am on their side for trying. No one is above the law when it comes to child abuse. If you know someone that is abusing a child you have a legal obligation to report them. If you turn a blind eye to it, it is bad, but if you go out of your way to cover it up, you are evil. Plain and simple. I feel bad for people of the Catholic faith right now, as their leader and the one that is supposed to have a direct line to god, is a fraud and cares more about protecting his religion than the people that are supposed to believe in it…

Prosecute him…

  1. I agree, holding the Vatican above the law is ludicrous in modern society. The pope should not be above the law and nor should leaders and priests of other religions. Religion seems to be the root of much evil, once you start looking at history.
