Your iPhone Is Secretly Tracking Everywhere You’ve Been, All The Time

The web was abuzz today with some finding from a study that our beloved iPhones track us all the time and save a hidden file every time you back it up. The file is there for the picking on your computer if anyone gets access to it.

Now I know that most people will say that this is not a big deal. If you aren’t doing anything wrong, who cares if you are tracked. Right?

When did we become a society where we thought it was OK to be tracked, put under 24 surveillance, and our every move is logged for future reference? What if you happened to be at the mall when someone committed a crime? Is it OK for the authorities to randomly search your ‘location beacon’ to see if you were there? Isn’t that like Gattaca? 1984?

What about if you choose to protest? Which is legal most of the time…We have all seen, even in our free democracies in North America people arrested without warrent. Detained for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or, if your government decides through their extremely fair, not biased AT ALL court system, that it was illegal to assemble in a public place due to some conflict. It would be easy enough to find out who was there. Just ask the phone makers to provide the GPS co-ordinates for that day, and they have all the data needed to start ‘questioning’ people. Don’t think it’s realistic?

Where is innocent until proven guilty?

It’s not just the iPhone. Android phones through Google, Windows Phone 7, and Blackberry all have not been clear whether they track you with their smart phones. Why would they all be doing this without our permission? Why can’t we opt out of it?

There is speculation that the US government is requesting this be a mandatory feature of smartphones. I don’t know if that’s true, but I love a good conspiracy theory!

What are your thoughts about phones tracking and logging your every move?

  1. I don’t know…I don’t think I’m too bothered, but at the same time it’s kinda scary to be monitored 24 hrs a day 365 days a year! Guess smart phones aren’t really that great huh?

    1. I feel the same. It’s not a huge deal. For me it’s about disclosure, and the ability to opt out of tracking.
The phone company can find me at any time but logging my location without my permission doesn’t feel right.
