There is something about riding a bike for the first time. Today my oldest son got a new ‘big boy’ bike. He was so excited! I helped him understand the way the gears worked, and off he went. He rode up and down our driveway so many times…He was having a great time.
He had a big boy wipeout!
I felt so bad for him. But at the same time, I wanted to share all the times I wiped out on my new bikes! So, after offering him chocolate chip cookies, and ice cream, we talked about the times I wiped out hard on my new bike. I remember 3 or 4 times bailing on new bikes and wrecking something. Whether it be a bike part or body part.
What is it about new bikes that makes something inevitably happen? Is it not paying attention to your surroundings because you are staring at the new gears, brakes, tires? Then, oops. Wipeout. Or is it not feeling as confident with handling the bike and it feeling more awkward? Or maybe even that you are so excited to ride the shiny thing, that you go WAY faster than you used to. Feeling like superman, then crashing down to reality…
I hope he remembers today as a milestone of getting into biking, and brags to his friends about his ‘war wounds’.
Do you have any stories to share about your first time riding a new bike?
