Today was Father’s Day. It started out better than most as I got to sleep in to a generous 8:30am. Once I had a coffee in me, my 8 year old son asked me if I wanted my gift. Sure, I said.

He’s been talking about how much I’m going to love my Father’s Day gift. To clarify how I feel about presents, I should say that any time my family gives me a gift, I don’t usually care what it is. Especially if it’s from my kids. It sounds corny, but it is the thought that counts! There is always a bit of nervousness though, just in case I don’t really know what my kid made or how to interpret the gift. “That’s beautiful sweetie, what is it again?”…

With a big grin, and full of pent up anticipation, he presents me with a hand made card (I love hand made kid cards) and open it up. Inside he has drawn The Flying Spaghetti Monster!

I was awe struck. It is like one of those moments when you realize that through all that you say and do with your kids, sometimes the littlest things stick. To say I was proud is an understatement!

Then, he got me to open what he has been waiting days for…

A hand made FSM! I teared up. I did! This was possibly the most thoughtful gift I’ve ever received. My boy is a lot older than I give him credit for…

I was so excited, I just had to send it to Bobby Henderson(the creator of the FSM). Here is our email exchange.

Hi Bobby,

I have just received the best Father’s Day present ever! My 8 year old was so excited to give me my present! He’s been talking about it for days. “Daddy, you will love your Father’s Day present!” Well, he was right. The fact that he made this at school and it made his teacher say, “What the heck is that?”, made me bust a gut. Here is the card he made and the paper weight for me to use on my desk at work(I’m a banker, so it should look completely odd on my desk. lol). Awesome. I’m a very proud dad…

His reply…

Wow – that is awesome!   I am curious, what is the character next to the FSM?  Are you familiar with Trogdor the Burninator from Homestar Runner?  I see a resemblance.

Your child is very talented and thoughtful.  Thank you for sending me the photos, I’ll put them up on the site ~today.

Attached: here is Trogdor.

I checked later this evening and Evan’s hard work made the front page of venganza.org! Here is the link! http://www.venganza.org/2011/06/fathers-day/

Evan had already gone to bed, but he will have quite a story to tell his classmates tomorrow! Once they figure out what the Flying Spaghetti Monster is exactly.

Today was officially the best Father’s Day ever.
