The Annual New Year’s Day (Night) Ride!

Tonight I got out late for my annual New Year’s Day ride! After a day of hanging out with my kids, and going to my parents’ house for dinner, I felt my opportunity of sticking to my annual ride was fading quickly. But luckily, every year at this time, I feel a renewed sense of energy to get out more often as a silent resolution.

Getting home at 9pm, I knew I only had a limited amount of energy left once the kids were in bed…

New_years_rideLate last winter, after a dismal season of riding due to the shorter days, I decided that instead of getting a monthly gym membership and sitting on a spin bike for a couple of months quietly crying inside my head; I would invest in a good quality night light for my helmet…rock-drops

Many of my friends consider me a bit nuts for heading out for rides in the dark, by myself in the woods, while listening to my iPod. Well, I say to them, “Me out for rides makes me less nuts..” (said in a crazy person’s voice…).

Today I decided to share, the best that I could, what I see as I ride through the forest at night…My wife says it creeps her out. haha. Silly wife, this is not Blair Witch…Is it?

Sorry, World. We fucked up.

Stephen Harper - Caricature

Just came across this website apologizing for Stephen Harper. lol. I thought it was cute and thought I would share. And, sorry again for letting you all down…I didn’t vote for him…

“Sorry, World. We messed up.We know you look to us as one of the last great strongholds of common sense in a swirling sea of crazy on this big ol’ crazy planet of ours.Decriminalized marijuana, same-sex marriage, our peace keeping force, universal health care, education, our stance on environment, human rights, and religious freedom made us look pretty darn awesome. Now were realizing that those things that made us awesome are being taken away from us, and its not just us Canadians who are paying the price.Turns out some of us thought it would be a grand idea to put this fucking guy in charge.”

Ontario’s Anti-bullying law is about bullying, not targeting religion

Yesterday I was listening to the CBC and came across an interview that really got my wife and I fuming. They had on a ‘spokesperson’ named Jack Fonsaka from The Campaign

English: this is my own version of what bullyi...

Life Coalition. They are a very right wing sect claiming to be Canadian Catholics.

They are anti-choice, anti-gay, and unfortunately are quite outspoken. I won’t give them the benefit of a link from my site, so go Google them.

The topic of the day was about bullying. The province of Ontario, the biggest province in Canada by population, is creating a bill to protect bullied youth in schools and give them the ability to have openly functioning groups without fear of violence and bullying.

I think the law is fantastic! Just like the law making targeting women needing abortions a crime. What pisses me off is the battle that these ‘people of faith’ start because they claim it is an attack of their beliefs. Really?

In reality it is the opposite of that. It is right-wing religious groups like this that support banning books, rejecting gay-straight alliances, wanting all sex education banned from schools, insisting the lord’s prayer be left in government legislatures, rejecting birth control, and wanting to outlaw abortion.

It is groups like this that breed hatred. I have said before and will say again, that I believe these groups have a right to speak their minds, but at the same time, so do gay groups, pro-choice groups, atheist clubs. I’m for instituting free speech even in their ‘sacred’ private schools.

The Campaign Life Coalition wishes only to have their voices heard.  And, it is simply wrong to let them get away with it

Movember is here. Time for some manly fundraising!

On November 1st I shaved off my beard in preparation for my very first Movember! What is Movember? From the site…

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in Canada and around the world. With their “Mo’s”, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer.

On Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their gallantry and valor by either throwing their own Movember party or attending one of the infamous Gala Partés held around the world by Movember, for Movember.

I love messing around with my facial hair, so I have decided to make November to grow a handlebar mo. My branch at work is behind me and is going to start doing some fundraising in support! If you are into opening up your wallet in support of men’s health, please donate through my link!

I promise to post a picture at the end of the month with the final results!

What the hell is this Occupy Wall Street thing?

Wall Street

I have not been paying too much attention to the Occupy Wall Street ‘movement’. It’s been going on since September 17th, and has now picked up a bit of steam in the States. There are now over 200 events scheduled across the US, and Canada.

I ask, what the hell is it going to do? In my opinion. Nothing.

Here’s why… Continue reading “What the hell is this Occupy Wall Street thing?”

Clifford Olson has died. Is it OK to say bad things about him now that he’s dead?

Canadians have breathed a collective sigh of relief that Clifford Olson has died today. He is our country’s most famous serial killer. For those of you that don’t live in Canada, he targeted, raped and tortured children and young adults. He was convicted of 11 murders on the west coast of Canada. Canada’s innocence was taken. He changed the face of trusting a stranger for an entire generation of kids. Even hitchhiking was now perceived as unsafe due to him. Continue reading “Clifford Olson has died. Photo of the day – Customer Service Fail

This trailer has a problem. It may look fine. It may look like it works. So what’s the problem?

The company that made it.

Dorel.

For full disclosure, I’ll admit that I got this trailer for free on usednanaimo.com. I couldn’t believe my good fortune! Why would someone give away an almost brand new double wide Schwinn trailer? I bet they called Dorel to get a part…

That’s what has been happening to us. When we got the trailer it didn’t come with the connector part that mounts the trailer on the bike. I didn’t think much of it.

I looked up the owner’s manual that came with the trailer and the price to order it was $6.99 plus $3 shipping (to the US and Canada). I had the part number, the cost and shipping to Canada seemed reasonable! So I called the customer service line on the owner’s manual and the lady that answered started me on a month long quest that hasn’t ended.

She told me that they didn’t ship to Canada. I told her that the owner’s manual specifically stated shipped to Canada on it. She said that wasn’t the case, and gave me the phone # for Dorel, ‘their parent company’.

I’ve learned that ‘Parent Company’ means no accountability in corporate speak. Dorel told me that they didn’t deal with customers, and that I was calling their corporate headquarters and they weren’t able to get me the part. Dorel is a CANADIAN company headquartered in Quebec! Here is Dorel’s vision…”Our vision is to create the most innovative and admired company in the recreation and leisure marketplace, and to become a global leader, which is why the Dorel segment was established in the first place.” Admired? By who?

The corporate headquarters gave me a different US phone number to call.

I called this new number and they proceeded to tell me that Dorel wouldn’t let them sell the part to me in Canada due to some trade agreement. ??? WTF? Aren’t you the same company?

Yes. The same company with parts spread all over the damn place.

They gave me the phone number for Dave. Dave in Vancouver. He was the Dorel rep nearest to me. I got excited…

Until some poor lady ripped my face off for asking for Dave. I figured out right away from that response that this lady has been getting anonymous calls for Dave for quite a while and she has lost it. “Not another fucking person asking for Dave!!!!!!!!!!!!!Fffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. This joke has gone on far too long…”

My wife went on their Facebook page to tell our dilemma with getting this $6.99 part. A nice lady that moderates their Facebook page emailed me directly to tell me she would help. She gave me the same phone number in the US that I got a month ago.

I have made at least a dozen calls to who knows where and the summer is coming to a close. No trailer part.

I finally saw a small light at the end of the tunnel, when a ‘Customer Relations Specialist” emailed me yesterday to say she could help. I stressed that I was a Canadian and hoped that wouldn’t confuse matters and make them think I was looking for a dog sled or snow shovel.

I took pictures today and have emailed them back. They asked for the model number, but apparently Dorel has problems with putting the model number anywhere on the damn trailer visible to the naked eye…

I promise you this. If I get the SA074 Coupler, and am towing around my child, I will make sure to get a picture for all the world to see. My worry is that the kid in the trailer will be 15 years old by the time we’re through…

Oh, and NEVER, EVER buy a Schwinn trailer.
