Photo of the day August 21, 2011 – Battles on the beach

When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time playing on my own. I grew up in a fairly small community and as luck would had it, my sister had friends around her age, but I did not.

So, I found ways to keep busy. I would play cars and do smash up Derbys with them. I would take my collection of stuffies, and have tag team professional wrestling matches, and I would also pay with army men.

Once I became a dad, I had this thought in my mind that I would never let my kids play with guns or play war games. Maybe it was because, as an adult, I had seen too much of the real world to want to ever glamourize guns and war. But now that my oldest is almost 9, I am starting to see games with army men and various laser guns as harmless entertainment.

So recently when we decided to head to the beach, I told my oldest son to bring his army men! He and my middle son spent HOURS getting along! Hours.

You don’t see them playing so well together most of the time. It could be many reasons, like a blended family, or their 4 year age difference, or that they simply are different types of kids.

But seeing them bond over such a simple toy, makes me think there is something more going on here. Like, kids have been playing war games for centuries, and maybe it helps them sort out good from bad.

I’m not sure, but I know that the army toys are being put next to the pail and shovel in our beach bag from now on!

Today was a grim day for the ‘markets’…Oh dear…To top it off, there are riots and uprising all over the damn place, and my wife dumped coffee on the Mac laptop. What a messed up day!

With a belly full of angst, I think I am better able to ramble my way through the root cause for shit hitting the fan. Lucky you! Continue reading “The sky is falling and everyone knows why”

John McCain is truly not smart enough to lead a country!

I try to avoid the media accounts of American politics, but it is really hard to ignore truly crappy leaders! John McCain is one of them…Watch and learn that McCain is not someone you want leading the biggest military in the world! If I could just vote against him…

Wouldn’t politics be interesting if we went out to vote against someone, instead of for them.I think we would have for more people out to the polls!

At least if he gets into power, we will have a new idiot to pick on…

George Bush claims the war is about terrorism, and freeing the Iraq people from “an evil dictator”. Not true. Here is another perspective of how politicians talk in circles!

I am heading out to donate blood today, and I really hate needles. I do it as I have the ability to absorb iron more than most people, and need to get rid of it. It is a good excuse to give blood to those in need. It seems to get easier every time, but my first donation didn’t go as well…

The first time I went, I felt really good. I came there with my ipod, listening to Tool, felt pumped up, and thought it would be a piece of cake. Mr. Confidence! As long as I didn’t look at the needle, I thought I would be fine. I thought everything was going well, and once the donation was complete, I went over to the cookie and juice table. Within a few minutes, my hearing started to go(ringing…), and I started to get some blurry vision. I thought, “dude, get it together. You are in good shape(mountain biker), and the youngest here.” Now, here I was donating the first time, getting jabbed by a needle the size of a pen( I shit you not), and I was the youngest person in there by 20 years.

So, I really didn’t want to pass out. Apparently, I had no choice… A nurse saw me looking very pale, and kind of green, and called out some code that gets everyone’s attention! Great, now I am causing a scene. Immediately a swarm of people are on me, and I am put on a bed next to the cookie table. I had to lie there for 20 minutes while all the seniors got their cookies and tea, and tried to make small talk with me. The first question seemed to be, “is this your first time?”. How humiliating. But I believe in self flogging, so I kept going. It does get easier, but I always have in the back of my mind, what if?

A long intro into a comic over at dustinland.com. It reminded me of my first time, and how some of us aren’t as tough as we let on…

Stop what you are doing and watch this video

This young girl spoke at the UN some time ago(1992). Her speech blew my mind. It is shocking how so much of what the world’s population is thinking is eloquently spoken by this child not even a teenager…

Let me know what you thought of it!

In case you are from Canada, or into environmental causes, her name is Severn Suzuki. Daughter of David Suzuki. Here is a link to some of her activities. A busy girl…
